Its almost the end of term! This week we have a Christmas Social, Gaming
and a guest lecture from IBM on virtualisation.

For the Christmas Social, you’ll need to signup on the Society website
at (http://www.uwcs.co.uk/society/events/details/865). There’s no limit
but we’ll need to know soon if we are to book a place.

The Social (Monday) starts at 18:30 at the Phantom Coach on the A45.

Society Books: WUGLUG and CompSoc have the opportunity to request
sample review books from O’Reily, in return we have to write a small
review. You can request that we ask for a book by emailing the WUGLUG
list.

Network Cable: Can be obtained by emailing the exec, cost 0.40 + 20p
per metre, e.g. 0.40 + (5×0.2) = £1.40 (5 metres), 0.40 + (10 *
0.20) = £2.40 (10 metres) etc.

Disk Space: Why not upgrade your CompSoc account disk quota? £2.50
for 500Mb, email the tech team to upgrade your account.

Welcome to Week 8, this weekend sees the Society’s first Programming
Competitions for the 07–08 academic year. Prizes are sponsored by
Bloomberg and total £1000.

To enter you must signup at the Society events page
(http://www.uwcs.co.uk/society/events). Teams must be of three people
or less, if you’re not in a team then we are also running a
‘matchmaker’ service – signup and email academic@uwcs.co.uk.

All,

Welcome to Week 6, there are lots of events happening this week so we
hope to see you all at some of them.

A highlight of this week (other than the LAN) will be a talk “Functional
Programming from Dummies” by Dr Steve Matthews of the Department of
Computer Science. The talk will introduce an alternative to Java
programming using a new language and design methodology.
