Graduation 2025 offered more than just heartfelt goodbyes and official confirmation that time at university is over…

Coventry University’s most prestigious prize for recognition, the Cecil Angel Cup, was awarded to our very own Activities Officer – Layna Forbes!

The Cecil Angel Cup is awarded to university staff or students for significant contribution to the development and significant enhancement of the reputation on Coventry University. Layna was recognised for her exceptional contribution to student life, inclusion, and community engagement both on and off campus.

During the graduation ceremony, Layna discussed what winning the Cecil Angel Cup meant to her.

“At first, I was shocked; I had five members of my family in the audience, so for them to hear what I have been doing to at university was a really proud moment.

“I think the main reason I was recognised was for my role as a part time officer with the Students’ Union and community engagement lead with the Disabled Students Community.”

“I am a very bad person when it comes to reflection as I’m just ‘go, go, go’ , so it was amazing to hear what I have done – I was trying my best not to cry during the speech.”

Although graduated, Layna is sticking around for another year as your Activities Officer, to which she discussed how things have gone since starting.

“I love it,” she admitted. “I love doing things like this.”

“My three years at university were amazing and the SU was a really massive part of my university experience. I love making a difference for students and do all of these amazing things; there is so much more I want to do.”

Congratulations, Layna!

Layna, like the rest of the team at Your Students’ Union, are getting ready for Welcome Week (week commencing 15th September).

So, as another year beckons, make sure to see our Welcome Week events at yoursu.org/whatson/events/ and get involved.
