Your PGR Officer, Kirsty Harrod, gives an update on the month of November.
As we wind down to the end of the year, I wanted to update you on what I’ve been doing as your PGR Officer.
We held a successful Research Voice Forum this month, tackling issues such as the return to face-to-face meetings, research culture funding, and teaching opportunities for PGRs. You can read the minutes from the meeting here. To raise any issues for discussion at the Forum, please contact the Research Rep for your centre. You can find out who your rep is here
I joined the UCU picket line this month, speaking to UCU members and passers-by about the experience of PGRs. I joined the Students’ Union in supporting the industrial action, as lecturers and other university staff from around the world went on strike to lobby for better pay and working conditions. You can read Your Students’ Union’s statement on the strikes here
Also, along with your Sabbatical Officers, I met with Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana, talking to her about the issues our students are currently facing. We spoke about the cost of living crisis, local rents and travel costs, and the burden of student loans. Zarah was supportive and agreed that any action plans for students need to include postgraduate researchers as well as taught students.
I’m always keen to hear from PhD and MRes students about your experience. What do you think could be improved about PGR life? Are there any issues you and your peers are struggling with? Please feel free to contact me at email@example.com, or email your centre’s rep.
Until next time,
