Hello everyone! We are Coventry Uni Historic European Martial Arts Society.
HEMA is a martial art designed to replicate the sword fighting styles of medieval Europe. We tend to focus on German Longsword, which is a great starting point for those new to the art.
The inexperienced are always welcome, we’ll help you get to grips with the basics!
Practice Time & Location: We get together on Wednesdays for 2 hours in Priory sports hall (6-8pm). Feel free to bring friends and if you need help finding the room let us know!
What do we actually do?
Most of the time we have Adam Rudling come in to teach us some German longsword techniques, and then we pair up and do a bit of sparring slowly or at full speed. It's all friendly and informal, historical conversations are always welcome. Occasionally Charles Puffer comes along with some heavier kit and he shows us some more techniques. If you'd like to look into different styles of fighting, there are examples of HEMA duels and SCA combat all over youtube.
Price: At the moment membership should be (only) £10 on top of the general fee for societies. This pays for the whole year, and you can show up the first time without paying if you want to try before you buy.
