Attending your lectures, seminars, labs, and scheduled learning activities is a key part of succeeding at University. Your attendance isn’t just about turning up, it’s directly linked to your academic success, wellbeing, and visa responsibilities (for international students). Because of this, the university monitors attendance for all students throughout the year.

Why attendance is monitored

The university tracks engagement to make sure you’re keeping up with your course, to identify when you might need support, ensure international students are fulfilling their visa requirements and to ensure students receiving SFE funidng are engaging in thier studies. If your attendance drops, you may receive reminder emails asking you to re-engage. These messages are the early warnings designed to help you get back on track before issues escalate.

Consistently low attendance can have serious consequences. If you do not respond to attendance emails or continue to miss classes without explanation, the university may begin formal processes that could ultimately lead to withdrawal from your course.

If you’re struggling to attend

Life happens. Health issues, personal circumstances or academic pressure can all make it difficult to attend regularly. If you’re finding it hard to keep up, reach out early. Support is available, and speaking to someone sooner can prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones.

You can contact:

  • Your Students’ Union Advice Service for free and confidential guidance on academic concerns, wellbeing, personal issues or if you’re worried about your attendance, receiving warning emails, or facing potential withdrawal. To contact the service, complete the online enquiry form.
  • The university's Student Wellbeing Service can support students with their wellbeing, disabilities, long-term health conditions and mental health. It's important if a long-term condition affects your attendance that your formally engage with Student Wellbeing to record this.
  • Student Success Coaches can support in developing plans to manage your different responsibilites affecting university life, including how to manage your studies. You can book an appointment with a Student Succes Coach here

The university provides information on Student Central about attendance and what to do if something is affecting your attendance. It's important to know that whilst the University does not authorise absence, you should let your course and local Registry teams know if you’re likely to be off for more than a fortnight.
