This community is for any student that self-defines as a woman and those who’s gender identities include ‘woman’ some or all of the time. We aim to offer students the opportunity to meet likeminded people, make friends for life and enjoy events all whilst making a positive change across campus.

What would you like to achieve in your role this year?

This year I want to achieve more awareness of the community and help everyone feel they belong to a safe and motivating community. I would like to better utilise platforms such as Aula which are already in place within the students daily life, to spread awareness and build better engagement. As your community engagement lead I’m excited for you to get to know me and how I can help represent you.

Inspirational Women in Time

  • 400BC – Agnodice, recognised as the first female gynaecologist on record
  • 1637 – Amye Everard Bell, the first woman in England to be awarded a patent
  • 1691 – Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, defender of women’s rights to education in Mexico and now appears on Mexican currency
  • 1893 – Kate Sheppard, New Zealand’s celebrated suffragist submitted a petition to parliament with nearly 32,000 signatures
  • 1911 – Raichō Hiratsuka, founded Japan’s first all-female run literary journal
  • 1950 – Doria Shafik, stormed the Egyptian parliament leading 1500 women to demand full political rights, pay equality and reform.
  • 1951 – Rosalind Franklin, discovery and photography of DNA’s double helix structure in the UK
  • 1960 – Rigoberta Menchú, the first indigenous person to win the Nobel Peace prize following the Guatemalan civil war
  • 1992 – Unity Dow, as a plaintiff in Botswana, won the right for women married to non-citizens to confer nationality to their children
  • 2016 – Loveness Mudzuru & Ruvimbo Tsopodzi, successfully campaigned Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court to rule that nobody under the age of 18 may enter into marriage including customary law unions.

Celebrate International Women’s Day

Each year, Your SU joins the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, held annually on 8th March. The aim of the initiative is to move towards gender parity worldwide as well as celebrating the achievements and contributions of women and girls across the world.
