British Sign Language

Sign language is a visual communication method of gestures, body language and facial expressions used by people who are Deaf or have hearing loss. British Sign Language (BSL) is the most common sign language in the UK, used by around 145,000 people. it is not universal across the world because other countries have their own established sign language.

Learning BSL gives you a great opportunity to make you stand out with communication skills in the world of employment. This will increase your understanding of the Deaf community and the communication needs of some deaf people

It is a great skill to add to your CV; demonstrating your ability to adapt and empathise with those facing different needs and barriers. You may want to consider a career using BSL, for example, you may want to become a teacher of the deaf, a communication support worker, or work within a deaf organisation.

Learn with BSL Club

Our BSL Club is an in-person opportunity to learn BSL, meet new people and develop your signing skills with our amazing BSL Tutors Ruth and Marian. During our six-week BSL Club you will learn finger spelling and greetings as well as being able to engage in conversation with a sign language user, as in the final session we will celebrate your signing with a party with members of the local Deaf community.

2nd Year Geography Student

I loved the BSL sessions and how we learnt genuinely useful signs such as directions and signs linking to education and employment. I also really enjoyed learning about Deaf culture. Marian's passion and personality she made every session really interesting and always made time for us outside of class.
