If you have “Home” fee status (are either a UK national, Irish citizen, have settled status under the EU settlement scheme, or have indefinite leave to remain) and are under 60, you may be eligible for postgraduate loans.

University Scholarships and Discounts

Alumni Discount – Coventry University offer a postgraduate taught alumni discount worth 20% of your total tuition fee. This means that if you have been awarded an undergraduate degree by Coventry University Group, and are applying for a full-time or part-time postgraduate course, you could get 20% of your tuition fees. Please note that you must be a self-funded student (not sponsored).

If you are eligible, this discount will be automatically applied following enrolment.

Postgraduate Taught Academic Excellence Scholarship – This is a scholarship worth £2000 and available to all students applying for a full-time or part-time postgraduate degree at Coventry University who achieved a First Class undergraduate honours degree from a UK institution.

This will be a one-off payment in your first year of study only. For part-time students, the scholarship will be paid on a pro-rata basis. Please note that you must be a self-funded student (not sponsored).

The University will automatically identify you for this scholarship and eligible students will be notified by email where they will be asked for their bank details. A cash payment will then be made directly to your UK bank account.

Postgraduate Master’s Loans

Can help with both course fees and living costs whilst you study a postgraduate master’s course. You can get up to £12,167 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2023.

You will have to pay them back when your income exceeds the threshold amount. You will be charged interest on the loan from the day that you received your first payment.

Please note that if you are studying a master’s course, you will not be eligible for an Adult Dependants’ Grant, a Childcare Grant or Parents’ Learning Allowance from Student Finance England.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

Can help with course fees and living costs whilst you study a postgraduate doctoral course (such as a PhD).

  • If you apply prior to your first year, you can get up to £28,673 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2023.
  • If you apply after the first year, you may not get the maximum amount, and can get up to £12,167 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2023.

You will have to pay them back when your income exceeds the threshold amount. You will be charged interest on the loan from the day that you received your first payment.

Studentships

Studentships are postgraduate positions that have funding attached. You will receive grants which cover your fees and living costs. They are mainly funded by UK Research and Innovation and are incredibly competitive so you will likely have to undertake a rigorous application and interview process.

You should apply directly through the University offering the Studentship. You can find studentships on websites such as Postgraduate Studentships who collate information to make your search easier.

Teacher Training

Additional postgraduate funding is available for some teacher training courses.

Initial teacher Training – If you do not already have qualified teacher status, you may be eligible for student finance for ITT (not including early years), Postgraduate Certificates of Education, and SCITT.

You will need to apply for undergraduate student finance to get funding for teacher training, and it is a loan which you will pay back once you exceed the payment threshold.

Postgraduate Teaching Bursaries and Scholarships – Bursaries and scholarships are available for teacher training for certain subjects. You do not need to apply for a bursary, it will automatically be provided to you if you are eligible. Find out more information on Get Into Teaching.

Social Work

There are bursaries available for students studying on social work courses.

Social Work Bursary – Help with living costs and tuition fees for students training for social work. It is not dependent on your household income and does not have to be paid back.

Charities and Trusts

Some charities or trusts may provide grants for students who achieve academic excellence and, typically, are from poorer backgrounds.
