Activities Officer Updates

As I approach the end of my role, the focus of my tenure is shifting to wrapping up and passing on the projects and initiatives I have started this year. For example - I have just finished my Activities Officer on tour campaign – due to its success I am aiming to hand this off to future officers to continue.

In my role, I have been taking more time to collaborate with those in different communities. As an example, for International Womens’ Day I took part in a panel talk to share a bit about my experiences as a Woman in a leadership position. I really enjoyed the chance to collaborate, and before I leave my role – I am eager to work on similar events in the future.

Community Engagement Lead Updates

Alex Powell – LGBTQ+ Community Engagement Lead

Due to the high volume of work I’ve been doing throughout the year – I am officially coming towards the end of my contracted hours for my role. To help continue to build a community for those who are LGBTQ+ at Coventry University, I am currently planning out different activities based on what people on the LGBTQ+ community group chat are saying they would like to see.

As a reminder – the Gender Expression fund is still up and running for all students interested, to learn more please click here

Natalie Ho – International Community Engagement Lead

I have not been able to be active over the last few months on account of my placement taking up most of my time. Now that my placement has ended, I am back and ready to fully involve myself in my role.

I have been monitoring my WhatsApp group to help International students within it engage with one another, and I have been putting out interest polls to see what events different community members would be interested in joining. Keep an eye out for events that I will be planning based on these polls in the coming weeks.

Outside of this, in February I did not get the chance to update everyone on how the International Welcome Week went. We had a very engaging International Welcome Week, with events such as movie nights, speed friending, a campaigning session, and a crafternoon hosted. You may have also seen me at the International Fair we hosted in Coventry, if you did – I hope you said hello! I also helped in hosting meet-up events for International students in London and Scarborough.

Nico Hlaing – Disabled Community Engagement Lead

I am just after hosting a games night for the Disabled community! While attendance numbers were relatively low, I really enjoyed the opportunity to engage with those who did show up for the event. When we have future games nights, I encourage all of you to come along!

Outside of my games nights and regular monitoring of my WhatsApp group chat, I haven’t had as much time to give back to the Disabled Students’ Community due to coursework commitments. When my coursework is over, I am excited to plan some more events before my time as a CEL ends.

Obonganwan Akpabio – Women’s Community Engagement Lead

In March, I hosted a variety of events in celebration of International Women’s day. These events included a collaboration with the Women in STEM society, an informative session on women throughout history where we learned whilst playing some interactive games, and in addition – I hosted a session on how to protect your mental health as a woman.

As I enter the final months for my role, I plan to use my remaining time in my role to spread positivity amongst my community through my WhatsApp group. Please let me know if you have any good ideas for future activities you might want me to host, and if you have any feedback specific to the Women’s community – please get in touch!

Alice Oyo-Ita – Global Majority Engagement Lead

Unfortunately, Alice was not available at our last meeting to provide an update on her activity. Please keep an eye out for future updates after our April meeting!
