Student Governance Structure Document

This document details the hierarchical structure of our student executive meetings at Coventry Students' Union.

Union Affairs Committee

The Union Affairs Committee sits at the top of the structure.
Coventry Executive

The Coventry Executive feeds into the Union Affairs Committee.

It also oversees the following sub-groups:

-Societies Executive
-Communities Executive
-Sports Executive
Student voice working groups also feed into Coventry Executive (but they aren't formally part of student governance structures).

London Executive and Scarborough Leadership Group

The London Executive also reports to the Union Affairs Committee. The Scarborough Leadership group isn't formally part of student governance structures, but also feeds into the Union Affairs Committee.

Union Affairs Committee

  • Union Affairs Committee Terms of Reference
  • Union Affairs is the highest student led decision making body representing students across our entire membership including Coventry, London and Scarborough. The committee meets twice each semester (once a block) addressing group wide issues, campaigns and union related matters. Made up of all 13 Elected Officers it also receives union wide student voice and advice trends.
  • Students can get involved by submitting an idea or a campaign through our website and presenting their suggestions at Union Affairs Committee.

Coventry Executive Committee

  • Coventry Executive Terms of Reference
  • Coventry Executive is a subcommittee of Union Affairs that meets once a month to represent students across Coventry University and CU Coventry, addressing campus-specific issues, campaigns, and projects to enhance the student experience. Comprised of elected officers and supported by Students’ Union staff, the committee meets regularly to discuss trends in student voice, oversee Coventry-based initiatives, and report its activities to Union Affairs.
  • Students can get involved by submitting an idea or a campaign through our website and presenting their suggestions at Coventry Executive.

London Executive Committee

  • London Executive Terms of Reference
  • London Executive is a subcommittee of Union Affairs that meets once a month to represent students across Coventry University London Campus and CU London, addressing campus-specific issues, campaigns, and projects to enhance the student experience. The committee is made up of Campus Officer’s, School Reps and Campus Experience Rep and meets regularly to discuss trends in student voice, make decisions on Society of the Month and report its activities to Union Affairs.
  • Students can get involved by submitting an idea or a campaign through our website and presenting their suggestions at London Executive.

Societies Executive Committee

  • Societies Executive Terms of Reference
  • The purpose of the group is to represent societies across all categories and vote on society funding decisions and consult on operational decisions. They will also aim to support the Activities Officer and all societies with their campaigns and activities by providing media, events, and engagement support.
  • Any student is able to submit an agenda item for discussion at the society executive meetings, This is raised to the chair before submission to the committee. All students are able to nominate societies for awards also.

Sports Executive Committee

  • Sports Executive Terms of Reference
  • The Sports Executive Committee is a group of individuals who work closely with the Sports Officer and Sport Coventry staff to help improve and promote Sports at Coventry University by acting as a voice for the students. Committee members are also responsible for voting on funding applications submitted by clubs to aid in their development as well as helping organise our big events like Varsity and Sports Awards.
  • Students can get involved by applying to part of sports exec, we have 4 roles that are open to all students, whether they are a member of a sports club or not. They can also submit agenda items by contacting the Sports Officer or sport Coventry staff.

Communities Executive Committee

  • Communities Executive Terms of Reference
  • The community executive acts as a representative group for our core communities across the CU group. The committee meet to discuss and vote on Community initiatives such as events and campaigns associated to their community, receive updates from the community engagement leads on their work and how they represent their communities at various councils and representation meetings.
  • Any student is able to submit an agenda item for discussion at the community executive meetings, This is raised to the chair before submission to the committee. All students are able to propose activities or campaigns relating to their communities.

Scarborough Leadership Group

  • Scarborough Leadership Group is a recently formed trial working group aiming to represent students across CU Scarborough, addressing campus-specific issues, campaigns, and projects to enhance the student experience. The committee is made up of Campus Officer’s, School Reps and Campus Experience Rep and meets regularly to discuss trends in student voice, decide on activity and report its activities to Union Affairs.
  • Students can get involved by submitting an idea or a campaign through our website and presenting their suggestions at Scarborough Leadership Group.
  • It does not form part of our student governance structures and is hoped to become part of our formal student governance structures in 2026-27 academic year should the trial be successful

Student Voice Working Group

  • Student Voice Working Group Terms of Reference
  • Student Voice Working Group (Student Voice Matters in the School of Health and Care) is a platform for School Reps to raise feedback on academic experiences, discuss student engagement activities, and commission projects to enhance the academic experience or students within their College/School. Chaired by the College/School Part-Time Officer and supported by Students’ Union staff, the group meets regularly through the academic year to review feedback, progress actions, and ensure effective communication between students, staff, and the Students’ Union.
  • Students can get involved in the Student Voice Working Group by becoming a Course Rep. Any feedback raised at Student Voice Meetings that needs further escalation will then be taken forward to the Working Group for discussion and action.
