Your first 4-6 weeks

At this stage you will have received confirmation that your lead a society request has been approved.

  • Mandatory Training
You'll be asked to complete your mandatory training before your induction meeting. This is an online training module and takes approximately 30 minutes, but it can be completed at your own pace. There may also be some in person training days throughout the year that you can attend also.
  • Induction meeting
During this first week we would like you to attend an Induction meeting with your coordinator (We’ll tell you who this is!). During the Induction meeting you’ll discuss:
    • Affiliation
    • Activities, Give it a Go’s and Events
    • Marketing, including promo stalls
    • Your constitution
    • Budget available
  • Design your Logo
Whilst we’re setting up your society webpages, we can upload a logo for your society. Our top tips for building your logo is:
    • Keep a consistent brand
    • Don’t use any copyrighted artwork e.g. you can’t use the University’s logo as a copy
    • Make it clear who you are and what your name is
    • Send your Logo and Branding to your coordinator for approval

During this first week our staff team will set up your webpage, email access and gather any information useful to you. You may be added into some MS teams channels where you can easily access our team.

This week is about promoting and marketing your society.

  • Promo stalls
During this week you’ll be able to host your first promo stall on site, Think about what you can show off about your society, Why students will get a membership and what do they get out of it?
  • Post and Email out:
Whether you’re an academic society or not all students have access to AULA, Post a quick message to course mates, friends and the student community about your society. If you’ve had people join your interested list, you can email them too. Our team have built an online video training library any time we need to show you a tutorial, you can access this here.
  • Give it a Go event planning
This week is an ideal time to plan your Give It A Go (GIAG) event. Submit an activity request for a Give it a Go (GIAG) event to take place in a few weeks time. GIAG’s are open to all students to join to get to know your society and Give being a member a go, this is an opportunity for you to convince them to get their membership.
  • Socials
Now that you’ve got a good understanding of what your society does and your brand, it’s time to start scheduling some posts on socials: What can you schedule to go out so you don’t spend every day designing posts?

During the third week your coordinator will meet with you to discuss how you’re getting on and if you need any support with anything. We’ll update you on how you’re getting on with the affiliation criteria and be able to support preparing for your GIAG event.

This is also a good time to think about your next promo stalls or see if you can visit in a course hour for academic societies.

During Weeks 4-6 you will be delivering your GIAG event and growing your society. You might have started your regular events or be moving on to plan other events. Your coordinator will check in with you and keep you updated on your affiliation progress and any information you should know. We’ll also start giving you information about merchandise, awards, sponsorships and development.
