Society Memberships

Societies are responsible for setting your own society membership, The minimum membership you can charge is £2 for your society. You’re asked to have a society membership as this is your primary source of income as a new society committee until you have sourced sponsorships, merchandise or funding for your initiatives. Regular participants with your society should get a membership. Memberships run until the End of the Academic year: 31 July each year.

Types of memberships

You can have different types of memberships, maybe you want to have a social only membership, maybe you want to set it at half price in the final semesters or Blocks for study.

Associate Members:

The Students’ Union also allows members of the public, staff, alumni etc to join as Associate members of the Union meaning they can go onto join any number of student groups they would like to.

Anyone who is not a student member can apply to be an associate member.

Associate members are covered in Bye-law 2 Membership of the Union

As a Society, in your constitutions, we will ask you if you are accepting associate members or not.

Subscription fees

Outside of your society membership we ask students to purchase a £3 subscription fee which covers their insurance for the year if they engage with a society group or sports club. The first time a student tries to get a membership to a student group they will be prompted to get the subscription fee. The subscription fee will only be required once per academic year regardless of the number of student groups the individual goes on to join.

What happens to memberships if the society goes dormant?

If your society is made dormant because of non-affiliation or a vote to disband the society at an AGM, all members will be offered a refund and the opportunity to submit a lead a society request if they would like to apply and keep the society active.
