Introduction to Volunteering

Coventry University and Your Students’ Union have been offering volunteering opportunities in the local community for many years; you could say that it is part of our DNA.

Throughout your time at Coventry University, there will be hundreds of projects with which you can get involved and how much you want to do is flexible. You can fit any volunteering experience around your studies to make the most of your free time.

It is very easy to get started on your volunteering journey. In the first instance, check out the volunteering section of the YourSU website – here you will be able to find out more about the volunteering department and what we offer.

Although you might think volunteering is a one-way street, it isn’t. Yes, the charities you work with will be getting your support and much-needed help, but you will benefit so much from it as well.

The skills you offer and the new ones you acquire will boost your CV and you can pick up vital transferable skills that could make you more employable upon graduation.

Volunteering gives you experience in communicating with others, teamwork, time management, leadership, project management and so much more.

You can also earn a digital badge through volunteering which you can display on your online profile to share with future employers and the hours that you put in can also go towards gaining a Leadership Award

Doing things for others has a positive effect on your wellbeing, especially if you are new to the area and want to improve the life chances for people in your local community. It is also a great way to meet new people and make friends.

We will be running several workshops during the first term where you can sit down with the team and find out more about what volunteering opportunities are available and the charities that you could be working with. We will also be hosting a Volunteering Fair.

The fair will be taking place on Tuesday 11 October from 11am – 2pm on the ground floor of the Hub. There will be lots of organisations coming along and you can chat to the representatives to see if you are the right fit for them. Book your free tickets now!

You can volunteer in the local community, volunteer on-campus, take part in a Volunteer Taster Days or support a Student Led project, it is totally up to you. We do find that once you’ve experienced a volunteering taster day, you will be back for more!

So why not give volunteering a go? It could open a door to new possibilities and a lot of fun.
