Why Testing Matters

Being conscious of your sexual health is very important. Anyone sexually active is at risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

If you are sexually active, it is important to be aware of the risks and how you can stay safe and try to prevent STIs. There are many things you can do, like using condoms and getting regular STI tests.

People who are sexually active should get tested regularly, however regularity depends on your sexual activity. It is recommended to get tested once every 12 months if you are sexually active. For individuals with multiple sexual partners, it is advisable to take an STI test every 3 to 6 months. For individuals engaging in high-risk activity, which can include unprotected sex and sharing drug injection equipment, testing is recommended every 3 to 6 months. If you’re unsure about how to practice safe sex, want more information or want to pick up some free contraception, you can head to your local sexual health clinic, and they can offer advice.

Symptoms of STIs

If you experience symptoms of a possible STI, don't wait for the regular check-up point, access an online test or visit a sexual health clinic. Symptoms of STIs include:

  • an unusual discharge from your vagina, penis or anus
  • pain when peeing
  • lumps or skin growths around your genitals or bottom (anus)
  • a rash
  • unusual vaginal bleeding
  • itchy genitals or anus
  • blisters, sores or warts around your genitals or anus
  • warts in your mouth or throat, but this is very rare
