Our Community Engagement Leads (CELs) meet once every month to update each other on what they’ve been getting up to. Read more about their progress from January below!
Activities Officer Updates
One of my current priorities is working with Alex and the University to review policy and training to better support the LGBTQIA+ community. I also shared an open invitation for Community Engagement Leads to approach me with any campaigning ideas they’d like to collaborate on. I’m really pleased to see progress on the Microwaves on Campus campaign, which has resulted in microwaves being installed in the Jaguar building for student use. I encouraged CELs to promote their use, as engagement is key to keeping them on campus. As I’ll be leaving in May, I welcomed any final collaboration opportunities before then.
Community Engagement Lead Updates
Alex Powell – LGBTQ+ Community Engagement Lead
One of my main priorities now is preparing for LGBT History Month, which is currently the focus of my work. I’ve written an article series for the month that is now in the approval stage, alongside planning a range of activities for the activity week. These events will run alongside the launch of my Rainbow Laces campaign.
As a reminder – the Gender Expression fund is still up and running for all students interested, to learn more please click here
Natalie Ho – International Community Engagement Lead
Unfortunately, Natalie was not available for our recent meeting – and so was unable to provide an update on her activity. Please stay tuned for future updates from February!
Nico Hlaing – Disabled Community Engagement Lead
I’ve been reflecting on recent community engagement work shared at the latest meeting, particularly the plans to organise a games night for Disabled Students based on feedback from the WhatsApp groups. It’s great to see this event currently in development, with the aim of hosting it later in February. I also welcomed the strong presence from Community Engagement Leads at the recent Activities Fair and enjoyed engaging with students and championing multiple communities during the event. I raised, alongside other leads, ongoing issues with students accessing community WhatsApp groups. This has now been taken forward to the marketing team, and I’m keen to see improvements that make it easier for students to connect and stay involved.
Obonganwan Akpabio – Women’s Community Engagement Lead
I’ve spent much of January focusing on preparations for International Women’s Month, which is currently my main priority. This has included planning events, reaching out to potential speakers, and working closely with societies and sports clubs to collaborate during the activity phase of the month. Alongside this, I’ve been writing articles to highlight International Women’s Month and its themes, while also regularly posting in the community WhatsApp group to encourage conversation and boost engagement. It’s been great to see increased interaction as plans take shape. I’m really looking forward to delivering International Women’s Month and seeing students come together to engage with the events and discussions planned.
