LGBT+ History Month: Round-up

February was a busy month for the LGBTQIA+ Community, with a wide range of activities and events across our campuses from crafternoons to clothes swaps. If you managed to attend, we hope you enjoyed yourselves, however this isn't the end of what you can get involved in! Read below for more..

Incase you missed our February events, there are lots of other easy ways that you can find out more about the history of the LGBTQIA+ Community. Some immediately actoinable ways can be by doing some research, following LGBT+ social media accounts, watching LGBT history-themed films and series, and reading LGBT history-themed books.  

Not sure what to watch but want to learn more about the community? Below are some LGBT history-themed film recommendations: 

  • Pride: this is a film that follows a group of lesbian and gay activists who raise money to help families affected by the British miners' strike in 1984. 

  • Milk: a biographical film based on the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. 

  • Moonlight: a coming of age drama that focused on the life of a black homosexual man.  

  • The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson: a documentary film following one of the most prominent figures in gay liberation and transgender rights movement in New York. 

  • Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution: this film explores the history and impact of LGBTQ+ stand-up comedy. 

  • Forbidden Games: The Justin Fashanu Story: a documentary that follows the life of Justin Fashanu, the first openly gay professional footballer. 

This is just a short list of LGBT history-themed films. There are lots of articles and list out there full of so many suggestions of films and series to watch as well as books to read! You can check out your local libraries for recommendations.

Every month, not just February, is a month to educate yourself further around the LGBTQIA+ community. There are so many easy and interesting ways to increase your education around the community, so keep doing it and share your findings with your friends and network! We hope this list of films and ways you can get involved is only a start to topics on the LGBTQIA+ community that you can increase your education on and involvement in.
