Students’ Union We Want Microwaves Campaign: Positive Update.
Over 1,150 Students Call for Microwaves, and the University Has Agreed to Act
The Students’ Union Full-Time Officers’ 'we want microwaves' campaign, launched on 17 November, See Campaign article has resulted in a significant win for students. In just 15 working days, 1,153 students signed an open letter calling for accessible microwaves on campus, one of the strongest demonstrations of student support for a cost-of-living and well-being initiative this year.
Following sustained campaigning and months of discussions with University Senior Leaders, we are pleased to confirm that the University has agreed to introduce a pilot microwave scheme at Coventry Campus.
Pilot Information
As of the 19th of January 2026, the University has agreed to implement a pilot microwave scheme at Coventry Campus.
Location – Jaguar Building G30A
Time – 8:00 (8 am) to 22:00 (10 pm)
Before using, ensure you read the guidance posters & the safety tips provided.
Please be considerate of the space and clean it to prevent accidents and fires.
Why JAGUAR BUILDING?
Due to the nature of microwave installation requirements, including appropriate power supply, ventilation, taps, sinks, and hygiene facilities, the University identified the most suitable initial location as the Jaguar Building at Coventry University. The space previously operated as a café and already meets the necessary infrastructure and safety standards.
This pilot will be closely observed over the first few months, allowing the University to assess:
Crucially, this pilot will provide the evidence needed to support a future Coventry University Group-wide implementation, ensuring microwaves can be rolled out across campuses in a sustainable and effective way.
We encourage all students to use the microwaves provided, as this is necessary for the university to continue providing microwaves across campuses. Lack of usage and inappropriate usage may lead to withdrawal of the microwaves already given to us by the university ‘use it or we lose it’.
