Academic Society Elections Eligibility

Our academic societies are normally associated with several courses within a curriculum area, for example, Law society has stronger ties to courses based in the law school. Most Academic societies plan and deliver activities and initiatives with their members and course members in mind. Our Society committees are representatives of their members and so there is a requirement on mandatory society committee member roles that students will only be eligible for these roles if they are on a course

Why set academic eligibility on academic societies?

We want all students across the CU group to have the opportunity to participate in relevant extra-curricular activity alongside their course and believe a strong factor that influences student experience is having a social element to their course.

By fostering relationships with Academic staff mentors and students within the courses, a wider range of support, resources and opportunities may be made available to the society.

We have seen examples of this working for societies such as:

  • Manufacturing and Aerospace using Technicians, specialist workshops and equipment
  • Specialist support and access for Economic and Investment Society's guest lecture series
  • Drawing guidance from lecturers on session contents and study support for Politics Society
  • and support negotiating suitable event timings and arranging lectures around large scale society events for Midwifery Society
  • Academic Societies looking to book College or School owned spaces are more likely to get access to specialist spaces as activities are more relevant to the topics covered for students also.

Setting the eligibility

We understand some academic societies overlap over multiple courses and want you to be able to request which courses should be eligible to lead your society.

Submit this short form to tell staff what course eligibility you believe should be set for your academic society.
