Behaviour and Online Conduct

All students, society members and committee members should abide by the members code of conduct. This means there is an expected standard of behaviour of all students and yourselves as committee members.

A number of people around a table.

Our Behaviour Expectations

  • We expect committees to remind their members to be respectful and sensible at society sessions.
  • We expect all members to adhere to the membership code of conduct, which they agree to by being a member of the Students’ Union itself. They are asked to agree to this before they can join any societies.
  • If you encounter any issues with members behaving inappropriately, please speak to your coordinator for advice.
  • You may be advised to make a complaint about those behaving inappropriately so this can be dealt with formally. You can read about the complaint's procedure here.
  • If anyone experiences bullying or harassment, we advise this is reported via the Student Wellbeing Case Reporting System

Online Conduct

We understand that having online platforms, events, different social media channels is an essential part of building your society community and believe these spaces help all members to have a positive society experience. In the course of a Student Group’s usual activity or whilst acting in their official capacity you must:

  • Be considerate when posting - never post anything inappropriate. Consider sharing multiple viewpoints, and consider in risk assessments if there are any actions to manage online behaviours where events are hosted online
  • Remember, once something is posted online, it cannot truly be deleted ever. Consider who may see your post as this may be accessible to friends, family, the Students’ Union, the university and potential employers.
  • When using online platforms, there is a risk of users posting harmful content so please be careful. Committees should moderate these platforms and inform their coordinator of any concerns.
  • Do not use your members data including emails for anything other than society communication. This includes promoting externals unless they have agreed to the SU’s sponsorship or external organisation forms as it is not an appropriate use of data and may be in breach of GDPR.
  • Keep group chats and online channels up to date to protect your current members privacy and ensure you provide clear handover of media channels and groups when new committee members start.
