Safeguarding and Wellbeing

Being a committee member means that you will on occasion take the responsibility of others welfare into your roles. This is why we require transparency around risk assessments, forms and safety. If something goes wrong, we want you to be equipped to manage different scenarios and know where you can go to get support.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is the responsibility of all committee members and members.

Safeguarding focusses on the protection of individuals and vulnerable groups from harm whilst Wellbeing refers to a broader range of considerations that impact a persons health and happiness. As societies, there will be Under 18’s and vulnerable adults that may be eligible to become a member or participate in your society activity, whom we and you as a committee are required to report any safeguarding concerns for.

Key reminders:

  • Don’t disclose personal data online (For yourself or others)
  • When recording or taking pictures at events ensure there is a photography or videography notice to make people in attendance aware and give them the option to opt out
  • Notify the SU if you are expecting under 18’s to attend your events, they must be in the care of a responsible adult and not left alone at your events, including Online events.

Safeguarding concerns should be reported to the Head of Advice and Wellbeing, ad7604@coventry.ac.uk as soon as possible. If they are not available please report to the suz106@coventry.ac.uk. If you receive an out of office notification after contacting these two staff emails, please email welfare.ss@coventry.ac.uk.

Wellbeing Support from the Students’ Union

We have built dedicated guidance pages to support safety and wellbeing enquiries. As committee members your role is to direct students who need support to these pages and services, you should not be providing individuals advice yourself when students can access these support services, your role is to signpost and raise concerns as you need to.

Under 18’s

Under 18’s may be able to join your society, This will usually show on your members list. Please consider this when planning your events and if you would like support understanding how you can make your events more inclusive of any under 18 members please speak with your coordinator.
