Asexual Awareness Week is to bring recognition to asexuality, within this page is what is it, how to be an ally and what to look forward to for this week.
Asexuality is defined as "Someone who does not experience sexual attraction" [1]. It is important to mention that asexuality is not chosen by the individual but is a sexual orientation. [2]
For instance, there are some other identities within this label, although this label can be used either way. An example of this is demisexual, defined as someone who experiences sexual attraction once a strong emotional connection has been formed. [2] It is important to mention that asexuality is a spectrum, falling into a grey area between sexual and asexual for example. [2]
Some notable figures are David Jay, an asexual activist who founded AVEN, Asexual Visibility and Education Network. Another inspiration was Yasmin Benoit, a model who is asexual and aromantic, advocating for asexuality, with a 2022 research project into asexuality. Some fictional characters who are asexual are, Yelena Belova in Marvel, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Todd Chavez from Bojack Horseman. Some celebrities who are within asexuality are Michela Coel, Alice Oseman and Janeeane Garofalo. [3]
Asexual awareness week is the last week of October every year. It is about the importance of education of this topic. It is a time to recognise the diversity within asexuality and bring about a celebration of the identity. This is important considering the lack of the terms use within LGBTQIA+ Representation, based on the few notable asexual characters in media. For more information on this matter, the link is attached. [4a]
To celebrate Asexual Awareness Week the LGBTQIA+ Students Community is running three events this week.
