What are they?

Societies are student led groups that are completely planned, organised and facilitated by student leaders. These volunteers work to build experiences for members and students of the CU group. We currently offer societies across the Coventry and London Campuses. Societies all have their very own webpage, online shop, memberships and social media. There are different types of societies:

Academic- If you’re looking for something course specific and opportunity to develop beyond the classroom in a particular subject area.

Non-Academic – If you’re looking for Faith groups, International and Cultural groups, Music and performance groups or even Hobbies and Special interest groups

With societies there is usually something for everyone and if there isn’t you can start a brand new group. Membership fees usually begin at £2 minimum and are set by the society leaders dependent on what you get access to across the academic year. If you’re not sure about joining a society, you can join a society’s “Interested List” a free subscription that adds you onto the mailing list so the committee can notify you of any opportunities.

What’s does a society being “up for adoption” mean?

If a society is “up for adoption” or you find it on the lead a society webpages it means we’re looking for volunteers to take over leadership of the society and begin hosting activity for it. Leading a society can be extremely helpful in helping you build key transferrable skills that you can take into employment plus you get to experience leading events, campaigns, projects and have fun whilst being a member also.

Can you start a new society?

Absolutely! If you don’t find anything that you’re interested in just yet but have something in mind, you can submit a lead a society request and a member of our staff team will support you in preparing and setting up a society. You do need to have a full committee in place to start and you’ll need to get a short list of other students who would be willing to join your society.

You don’t need to have any prior skills or knowledge to be a committee member, we give you all the training and support you need to get started and you’ll have access to our staff team throughout your term.
