Start building them now with Operation Wildflower or the Student Communication Project...
Your degree gives you subject knowledge, but employers also look for evidence of initiative, leadership and real-world problem-solving. Getting involved in projects outside your coursework is one of the best and easiest ways to build that evidence while you’re still at university.
That’s where Operation Wildflower and the Student Engagement Project with Coventry City Council come in.
💚 Operation Wildflower – design solutions for sustainability 🌿
In Operation Wildflower, you’ll work in a small group to identify a sustainability issue or challenge affecting students or the local area, then plan a realistic solution. Over 8 weeks, you’ll:
Learn the basics of project management, from scoping a problem to planning next steps
Practise ideation and creative thinking to generate and refine ideas
Develop your storytelling and pitching skills
Present your proposal to potential funders or external stakeholders who could help take the project forward
The programme starts Thursday 8 October and runs for on the Coventry campus. It’s open to all students who can attend in person.
📱Student Communication Project – shape how the city talks to students🌐
In the Student Communication Project, you’ll work directly with Coventry City Council to improve how the city communicates with students. Together, you’ll:
Identify gaps in students’ knowledge about topics like council tax, voting, jobs, “love where you live” and vaccinations
Co-create clear, student-friendly campaign content that helps new and international students settle into life in Coventry
Meet city dignitaries and local councillors at Council House and see how local decisions are made
This is a 3-week, in-person commitment at Coventry Council House, with only 30 spaces available. Open to students who can commit to the programme and attend for all three sessions.
Why this matters for your future
These experiences are not just “extracurricular,” they are continued professional development in action. By taking part, you’ll:
Build a track record of proactive involvement and leadership potential
Gain concrete examples to discuss in applications and interviews
Show you can motivate others, manage your time and prioritise alongside your studies
Whether you’re interested in sustainability, public policy, communications, community work or any other career, these projects help you practise the skills employers value and make a real difference in Coventry.
