Congratulations on securing your place at university! Do you need some help with your packing? Check out our friendly guide to packing smart!
Heading off to university is an exciting time, but knowing what to pack can feel a bit overwhelming. Whether you're moving from one city to another or even from another country, packing smart can make your transition to Coventry University a lot smoother.
Your Students’ Union is here to help. To get you started, we recommend focusing on the essentials:
Clothes
UK weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to pack clothing to cover all types of weather.
- Bring a mix of everyday clothes and layers for colder months; essentials include warm jackets, gloves, a scarf, a raincoat, and cosy jumpers.
- Pack a couple of outfits for university events or nights out, and don’t forget comfy loungewear and activewear.
- Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you'll be walking a lot around campus or in town, and a good pair of waterproof boots will come in handy on rainy days.
- If you’re an international student, you might also want to bring some traditional or cultural clothing for special occasions and community events.
Electronics
Essential for both personal and studying, don't forget your electronics when packing.
- A mobile phone, laptop, chargers, and a portable power bank are a must for studying or staying connected.
- If you're arriving from another country, remember that UK plug sockets will be different to ones at home, so you will need to bring a travel adapter or purchase one after you arrive.
- A power strip is a great idea too, especially if your room has limited sockets.
Home Comforts
It is easy to miss home, especially in the first term, so small homely touches will go a long way.
- Bring personal touches like photos from back home, soft pillows, and cosy blankets to help make your room feel more like home.
- You might also want to pack some of your favourite snacks, treats or spices to recreate meals from home, especially during those first few weeks when everything feels new. Familiar flavours can bring a sense of comfort and help you settle.
Be aware that when you travel from abroad, some items such as non-EU plants, certain foods and everyday drugs are not permitted through UK Customs. Make sure you check what you can and can't bring through the UK Border Force here.
Important Documents
Last but not least, don’t forget to pack key documents such as;
- Your passport, Coventry University acceptance letter, visa documentation and any other important documents.
- Depending on whether you're coming from abroad or just a few hours away, you might also consider bringing kitchenware, toiletries, and stationery.
- If you're an international student, we suggest that you avoid overpacking since many everyday items can be bought easily and cheaply once you arrive. Alternatively, you can also order student bedding and kitchen kits online for delivery straight to your accommodation.
Top Tip: Before you start packing, check what’s already included in your accommodation. Some rooms come furnished with bedding, kitchen appliances, or cleaning supplies. Knowing this ahead of time can help you avoid packing or buying unnecessary items.
Finally, don’t forget to pack your adventurous spirit and an open mind! University is a chance to learn, grow, and meet people from all walks of life. We hope you make the most of it!
