Championship Weekend

They've only gone and done it again. Our Women's Gaelic Football team are now back-to-back British Champions after competing in the Division 1 University Championship games this month. Showcasing what they are capable of competing at the highest university level.

On Saturday, 22 March, the team headed to Páirc na hÉireann in Solihull for their first three Championship group games. They faced off against Liverpool John Moores, Robert Gordon University and Loughborough University. Cheered on from the sideline by coaches, friends and family, the team smashed it, winning all the group games and earning themselves a place in the Semi-Final against Liverpool Hope Univeristy. Continuing the momentum of the previous games and without a doubt left in anyone's mind, they won again, securing their spot in the finals.

Finals Bound

On Sunday, 23 March, the team returned to Páirc na hÉireann, drawing an even bigger crowd eager to see the team bring another trophy home. Their opponents were the University of Liverpool, who had similar success in their group stage, winning all of their games, so this was going to be a tough match-up.

After a slow start and being down at half-time, our Coventry team showed us all what they are made of and brought it back to a final score of 3-12 to 2-11, securing the victory and keeping their title from last year as All Britain Champions.

Our Women's Gaelic Football side is highly deserving of this title; their dedication towards the sport and the effort they put in is immense. They have had a fantastic season as a team this year, winning their regular season league and even winning themselves an invite to the prestigious Irish Championships for their sport, being the only British university invited to the competition and the first team in 6 years to represent Coventry University overseas.

Game Recognises Game

Continuing their pattern of success, at our recent Sports Awards, as a Club, they were nominated for a whopping seven out of the nine awards up for grabs and managed to take home two. They won the Club Online Presence award for the work they have put into their social media, helping promote the team and recruit new players, showcasing the spirit of Sport Coventry. They also won Team of Year (Competition) for their amazing performance at the championship games and getting invited to represent the university in Ireland. 

We couldn't be prouder of what the team has achieved this year.
