Hey, Panchami here, your Education Officer! This SHAG Week, we have run a number of events to do with sexual consent, sexual health and exploring ways you can enhance your sexual experiences. It’s been great to meet so many of you and provide support and assistance within this topic!

Did you know that certain foods can have a positive effect on sexual desire and intimacy? These are called aphrodisiacs; foods that have this effect include luxuries such as caviar, oysters, and truffles. None of these are the friendliest on your bank balance, especially as a student! But there are alternatives; read on and find out which foods can be both cost effective and have the desired impact…

  • Chili – chilies and other spicy foods have aphrodisiac qualities due to them containing capsicum (the stuff that gives it spice). These are available from all the main supermarkets and can be added to pretty much any dish!
  • Figs – figs are not just found in fig rolls in the back of your grandma’s cupboard – they can be added to a range of Mediterranean dishes to add a fruity flavour. They are also popular in aphrodisiac folklore, dating back to ancient Greek times.
  • Honey – similarly to figs, honey is a popular one in aphrodisiac folklore. You can get honey from any supermarket, but locally sourced honey is also proven to help prevent seasonal afflictions such hayfever – so maybe try and find a local supplier!
  • Ginseng – this tradition Asian root remedy is newly popular alternative to caffeine that has been found to prevent tiredness and boost energy, but with less of the negative side effects! You can find ginseng energy drinks online, and health stores such as Boots and Holland and Barrett sell one-per-day vitamin-style tablets containing ginseng as well as ginkgo (another proven aphrodisiac!) and guarana. You can grab a box of 30 for as little as £7!

So whether you’re cooking at home or out for a romantic meal, keep an eye out for these ingredients; and regardless of how effective these foods are, make sure to practice safe sex at all times!
