Our contacts at West Midlands Police informed us this week of two recent cases of sexual assault in a popular student area of Coventry - Swanswell Park. When incidents like this happen, it can leave whole communities feeling shocked, concerned and vulnerable. We would like to reassure all students that an arrest has now been made and West Midlands police are working hard to support anyone who may be affected. This support includes police community support officers coming to campus to provide reassuring advice and a friendly listening ear at our ‘Cuppa with a Copper’ event this coming Tuesday (6 February) from 11am-1pm.

We believe every student deserves to enjoy university life happily and safely and want you to know that there is information and support out there to help you do this. Outside of our face-to-face events, you can read our safety pages for information on topics ranging from safe nights out to how to identify and report assault and harassment. For extra peace of mind you can also download the SafeZone App. This will give you the ability to get instant support from your campus protection team across many university zones around the city centre. If you prefer to seek support outside of the university, West Midlands Police have a safety information Hub dedicated exclusively to students. They also recommend downloading the HollieGuard app, which will allow you to send instant alerts for help to friends, family and support services when you’re out and about in areas outside of our Coventry campuses.

If you are feeling particularly triggered by or worried about the recent incidents detailed in this article, please do come along and chat things through with your campus police community support officers. Cuppa with a Copper is relaxed and friendly, with confidential space to talk if you would prefer. You’ll find us in the SU welcome area on the first floor of The Hub from 11am on Tuesday.
